Riverside Rangers Atom Minor win Belle River’s AA Tournament in convincing fashion

Windsor —Riverside Rangers Atom Minor won their first tournament of the year posting a 6-0 record over the weekend while allowing just 5 goals.

The team started the weekend with a dominating win Friday morning over Oshawa by a score of 6-1.  A balanced scoring attack had 5 Rangers netting goals with a pair by Jack Wadsworth.

The afternoon game was a nail biter against a highly ranked Milton Winterhawks.  The game went down to the last minutes with the Rangers prevailing 2-1 behind Reid Ashton’s game winner and solid goaltending from Cayden Brown.

Saturday brought 2 straight shutouts from goaltenders Dash Koppeser and Cayden Brown against Waterloo and St Catherines respectively.  In the opener Koppeser turned away everything that came his way in a 4-0 win.  Scoring was provided by Ashton, Wadsworth and Jessica Macneil’s first goal of the tournament.  The second game of the day was closer than the 5-0 score would suggest as St Catherines had quality scoring chances throughout.  The Rangers however shut the door and continued scoring with Wadsworth netting a pair along with Carter Maxey, Zack Rehberger and Hayden Bunn.

The semi-final game took place on Sunday morning against host Belle River.  Trying to avenge the Rangers only league loss to date they started out flying scoring just over a minute into the game on a goal by captain Riley Bentley.  Riverside continued putting pressure throughout the first period but could not get one to the back of the net and Belle River took advantage of a scramble in front of the Rangers net to tie the game at one after the first.  The second period saw much of the same with constant pressure on the Belle River net and a beautiful bank hand goal by Wadsworth half way through the period to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead through two.  The third period had opportunities at both ends of the rink with a great glove save by Koppeser late in the game to preserve the 2-1 win.

The final game came Sunday afternoon against another talented in Caledon who just came off a shoot out victory over Milton in their semi.  The game started off great for the Rangers on an early goal by Ashton.  The remainder of the period was entertaining as both teams showed off their speed and puck moving ability to entertain the crowd.  Going into the second period with a 1-0 lead both teams continued to press and Caledine scored on a partial breakaway that slide under a sprawling Brown to tie the game at 1.  The goal did not phase the Rangers as Wadsworth battled his way in for a great goal shortly thereafter to restore the lead.  Going into the third period with a one goal lead the Rangers continued to press until a bounce went the way of the visitors sending in their top player on a breakaway beating Brown to tie the game.  That would be the last goal given up in the tourney as Brown’s glove continued to shine and the Rangers offense started to roll.  The passing picked up pace and the speed wore down their opponents resulting in goals by Ashton, Wadsworth and Baylor Wilcox to wrap up a 5-2 victory and the team’s first tournament win of the year.

A special shout out to the teams defensive pairings of Curtis Chamney/Ella Chan, Cole Allton/Ciarran Cocchetto and Cam Bishop/Justin Phillips for a great weekend holding the opponents to just 5 goals!!

Congratulations to the entire team on a complete team effort!
